DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY

A Chalcolithic ceramic showing non-Harappan features, obtained from the site of Padri, is the Padri Ware. It occurs Pre-Urban Harappan and Urban Harappan periods (3600 – 2000 BC). The hand/slow-wheel-made coarse ceramic is characterized by having a thick red slip with black paintings. The important vessel shapes are bowls with straight/incurved/convex sides, stud-handle bowls, basins, globular pots, dish-on-stands and perforated jars. A resemblance of the Padri ware with the ceramics from North Gujarat and Pre-Urban Harappan pottery from Dholavira is noted.
