People of Kerala used many plants like Hibiscus as herbal shampoo in the olden days. They collected the twigs from homesteads or edges and took them to the ponds when they went for bathing. Many ponds had specially prepared stones known as Taali kallu. The twigs were scrubbed on these stones with a handful of water. The viscus liquid thus formed was collected in a bowl-like depression made in the Taali kallu itself to apply as shampoo.
